Earth Day

People all over the planet celebrate International Earth Day on April 22nd. What do Freshbedýnky do to make us feel better on the Earth? What can you do? Read a short interview with Veronika and some simple tips for everyday´s greener behavior.

Why did you decide to support ORGANIC way in Freshbedýnky?

I see organic mainly as something normal. It is a way of growing plants and livestock breeding without unnecessary chemicals and in harmony with nature. The way thanks to which the land can be cultivated for a long time, nourished and still usable for other generations. I think many of us do not realize deeply, that in several years the conventional agriculture will be in real trouble. Not for nothing the smart investors buy lands on the east, where there the land hasn´t been debilitated by conventional farming, yet.

Why is organic food abroad, mainly in the west, more widespread than here?

Very often we hear the opinion that this is due to different living standards and so „they can afford“ the better quality of food. The truth is that the prices of food are generally highier in the west  – even for conventional food – hence the difference between conventional and organic food is not as significant as here. Conventional food in our supermarkets is very low quality, so it can be sold cheaply. This largely makes the impression that quality food is expensive in Czech Republic.

In the west they also have longer experience with organic production – the farmers have more experiences, better mechanization etc.

Moreover, there´s usually much lower VAT on food than ours 15%. In Germany it is 7%, in the UK even 0%. And this affects the price for consumers quite radically.

Are ECO and ORGANIC the same?

People sometimes confuse the meanings of words eco, organic and farmer´s. Eco generally means the environmentally friendly behavior in any way. Organic regards to the agriculture and food processing. Buying organic products is thus one of many ways of how to behave ecologically. If you want to be sure, buy food and products from certified producers. For example, at popular farmer’s markets you can find organic food, but it certainly isn´t the norm, rather the opposite – not every farmer respects the rules of growing without using the chemicals.

How do you contribute ecology in the daily running of your company?

We sort out waste, use recycled paper and eco drugstore from soap to washing powder and floor cleaner. We let composting vegetables and fruits that don´t get into boxes of our customers. The boxes are backed up and it enables us to use them several times without unnecessarily throwing it to the bin. In addition, the cardboard, from which they are made is also recycled.

What can each of us do to behave more environmentally friendly without significantly affecting his habits? Get inspired by these tips:

  • Buy local products, choose food in organic quallity
  • Reduce the use of plastic. Buy a glass water bottle and fill it up at home; glass or stainless steel container for lunch instead of throwing away a plastic one after each lunch; keep a stainless steel mug for your morning coffee or enjoy it on the spot from porcelain instead of throwing away a paper cup after your take-away
  • Plug off electrical appliances when not in use
  • Regulate your thermostat when you are out of the house
  • Save the water – turn it off when you wash your hair or teeth
  • Be a green gardener, use only natural spraying, start your own compost, collect rainwater for watering
  • Buy energy efficient appliances, including light bulbs
  • Use natural resources to generate electricity and hot water, such as solar panels on the roof of your house, if you have this opportunity
  • Reduce your fuel consumption: walk, ride your bike, use public transport
  • Use your vote to support politicians who care about the environment
  • Inspire your friends, family and colleagues by your behavior

It is scientifically proven that organically grown crops are healthier

Read about the Newcastle University – led study, Nutritional Composition of Organic Crop Foods, which is the most comprehensive scientific review of the organic versus non-organic so far.

Every year the non-profit American organization EWG (The Environmental Working Group) publishes a list of foods that contain the most and the least pesticides. The research is focused on the US market. Check out our revised list of foods that are better to buy only in organic quality.
